Today marks the 67th birthday of Parvin Akhter Poppy, popularly known by her stage name, Babita. She has worked with renowned directors Zahi Raihan and Satyajit Ray. Babita was the golden star of cinema from the 70s. She has acted in more than 350 films in her career.
She began working as a teenager, with the film Shongshar, directed by Zahir Raihan. Many of her films were appreciated in the biggest film festivals, both at home and abroad. She was honoured with the National Film Award several times, and also recognised in India for her work.
She played Lailee in the film Lailee Majnu, opposite Razzak. The film featured the hit song, Lailee tomar eshechhe phiriya Majnu go ankhi kholo. The iconic song, chul dhoirona khopa khule jabe hey nagor, from Noyonmoni, featured Farooque and Babita. She has also worked with Zafar Iqbal and Bulbul Ahmed. The song Jodi bou shajo go from the film Wada, starring Babita, has been remixed and remade multiple times and is popular even today.
Another track from the movie Obujh Hridoy, starring Babita, Zafar Iqbal and Champa, Tumi amar jibon, was a major hit upon its release. Swaralipi, starring Babita and Razzak, was one of her most remarkable films.
She played the iconic role of Golapi in Amzad Hossain’s Golapi Ekhon Train e. Her role in Alor Michhil also brought her fame. Ononto Prem directed by Razzak, was another hit film of Babita.
Taka Ana Pai, directed by Zahir Raihan was the turning point in Babita’s career. She played the lead in Satyajit Ray’s Asani Sanket, which was internationally acclaimed.
On this day, Babita is not doing anything special. She prays that things get back to normal quickly, and that she can meet her son Anik, who lives in Canada. She has asked her fans and well-wishers to pray for her.
